6 Reasons to Homeschool for Preschool

Should I homeschool for preschool?

The question keeps rolling around in your mind….should I homeschool for preschool? Maybe a friend of yours is homeschooling.  Maybe reality is hitting that your preschooler is almost school-age, and you want to savor every last moment with him. 

Or possibly finances are tight, and you just can’t pay the hundreds of dollars each month to send your child to preschool.  Perhaps you’ve planned on homeschooling from the moment he was born.  Whatever the reason is, you are mulling over the question and trying to come to a decision.

Enter this Google search…..hopefully I can help you.  But why should you listen to me?

Well, I’ve homeschooled for over 18 years.  I have 4 children, all have only ever known homeschooling.   I have graduated 2 of my oldest and still have 2 littles at home (there’s a big age span between my first two and my last two!). 

So I have homeschooled preschool 4 times, and before that, I went to college for Early Childhood Education where I learned the RIGHT way to preschool is sometimes very different than what is actually being done. I am very passionate about preschoolers learning through play, not long hours of sitting doing worksheets.

The preschool age is my favorite stage in child development

They are so curious and independent yet they still need snuggles and cuddles and kisses. The brains of preschoolers are like literal sponges…they soak up everything. This is the perfect time for them to learn colors, shapes, letters, numbers, scissors skills, calendars, songs, rhymes, etc. The list is endless on what preschoolers learn so easily!

But this isn’t the time to cram their heads with never-ending worksheets and boring lists of memorization. We don’t want to kill their love of learning at this tender young age. We want to show them that learning is fun and can be life-changing. And we do this through PLAY.

So the big question is that you are still wondering….should I homeschool for preschool? Why, yes! Yes, you should! I’ll explain why.

6 Reasons You SHOULD Homeschool For Preschool

Academic Adaptability

Preschoolers are all different academically.  They are ready for different things at different times.  This is why home is a perfect solution for preschool.  You can be the judge of when to start what, when to back off of a subject and reintroduce later, and when to forge ahead on a topic.  Your child will get an individualized education, created specifically for him or her.

Interest-Led Learning

I like to homeschool for preschool through themes or unit studies.  This is where you take a topic and learn about that topic for 1-2 weeks.  Every activity is geared around this topic.  So when you homeschool your preschooler, you can gear these topics to what your child likes or is interested in learning more about.

Family Relationships

Homeschooling will strengthen family bonds – parent/child relationship, sibling relationship, grandparents/child relationship.  Why?  Mainly for the fact that family members are around each other!  Just think how many hours a day families aren’t around each other when children go to public or private schools. 

While homeschooling your preschooler, you will be around to experience the wonder and excitement when your child first learns to recognize letters…the very foundation of all learning. What a momentous occasion, and you will be the one to teach him!  You won’t have to hear about it from a teacher or take a worksheet out of his backpack and find out.  You will actually witness it.

Sibling relationships will also be strengthened.  “But all my kids do is fight with each other!”, you might be saying.  I can recommend lots of different resources to help with sibling rivalry.  But that can be worked on.  Even if they fight like cats and dogs, you will see moments of love and friendship between your children that you will know is the result of homeschooling, I promise.

Flexibility

This has always been my favorite benefit of homeschooling.  You can do whatever you want, when you want.  Take a vacation in the fall or spring when places are way less crowded and hot.  You don’t have to go on spring break or summer when vacation spots are teaming with crowds.  Pick when is the best time for your family to go, not when is best for the school.    

You can take field trips when you want.  Or not take field trips at all.  It’s your choice.   You don’t have to worry about getting up early and driving through school traffic.  Cutting errands short to make sure you get a good spot in the pick up line is a thing of the past. You don’t have to schedule doctors appointments on breaks or after school or worry about getting a doctor’s excuse when your child is absent.  Your time is your time!

Money

Preschool at a facility is expensive.  There’s just no way around it.  Plus you will be paying for gas driving there and back, school supplies, and school clothes.  Preschool at home will be much less costly, a fraction of the cost.  And you won’t be paying for gas or new school clothes.  They can do school in their pajamas, if you allow!

Delight in Childhood

Ah…sweet mama, if only I could describe to you how fast time goes.  I’ve been a mom for 23 years.  I so wish I could go back and be more PRESENT with my oldest two children who are only 17 months apart. 

I wish I had savored each moment with them. 

If I could turn back time, I would sit and just watch their faces, their smiles, their sweetness. 

I would cuddle more and worry less. 

Life is short, mama.  Take these preschool years and hold on tight to them.  Keep them home….love on them….have FUN with them.  They adore you.  So strengthen that bond and create memories that they will remember forever.
